Behind the scenes

Was it love at first sight when we first walked into Villa? Yes. Did it need a lot of work? Also yes.

What was once an engineer's residence (one can dream), is now becoming a museum for contemporary art. A home for playful, experiential works. For a growing family of artists.

Over the past years, this monumental building has served many purposes, from office space to yoga studio. Now, it’s our turn to fill the canvas. And we’re here to stay. Room by room, we’re filling Villa’s four floors with art this summer.

Of course, we’re not doing this alone. We teamed up with Atelier Tomas Dirrix, known for his work with institutions like Kunstinstituut Melly and Unfair Amsterdam. Together, we looked for a natural flow through the building – a route that invites you to wander from work to work. We believe a museum space shouldn’t be just a white cube you step in and out of. Each room offers a different view: onto the green garden, Westerpark, or the industrial side of Westergas. It adds an extra dimension to your visit.

Villa was fully furnished with and by artists. Even the tiniest room has been designed in detail. The bathroom tiles were designed by Palet; the sinks were created by Boris de Beijer and Kick Veldman

We’re also preserving the character of the building. In the old wine cellar, we restored Delft blue tiles; in the former kitchen, we brought back the fireplace. These historical details make the museum feel like a true home. On September 13, we open our doors. Will we see you there?
