New museum Villa opens in Amsterdam: art that hits home instantly
On September 13, 2025, Villa, a new museum for playful, immersive, high-quality art, opens its doors at Westergas in Amsterdam. Villa is located in the recently fully restored, monumental ‘Ingenieurswoning’ in Westerpark. With this unique location and a distinctive vision of art experience, Villa aims to become a new cultural hotspot for a broad audience.
The first confirmed artists include Elsemarijn Bruys, Folkert de Jong, Gilleam Trapenberg, Levi van Veluw, Thomas Trum, Vera Gulikers, Willem de Haan, Yamuna Forzani en Zoro Feigl. The remaining names will be announced during the summer months.
The exhibited art is characterized by its direct, sensory appeal: colorful, playful, often large-scale. It is art that surprises, moves, and touches – without requiring prior knowledge or explanation. “The art at Villa works like love at first sight: it touches you immediately, and afterward you feel the need to deepen your understanding. Not the other way around”, according to the initiators.
Instead of thematic exhibitions, Villa presents unique rooms featuring different artists — each with its own strongly sensory story. The setup is compact, accessible, and inviting, with space for further exploration after your visit. In this way, Villa bridges the gap between immersive attractions and traditional museums.
Villa targets a broad and especially young audience. Due to the type of art, the location, and the accessible way of presenting, Villa is a home for everyone who seeks inspiration.
The initiative for Villa comes from Adam Nillissen, Bas Koopmans, and Cas Boland — three friends, creators, and entrepreneurs with deep roots in the art, culture, and creative sectors. Born from a shared love for art and culture and a passion for developing new formats, the idea for this museum took shape. “We want to create an accessible place in Amsterdam for playful, experiential, high-quality art. It’s fantastic that this dream is now becoming a reality.”
