For Villa’s entrance, Merijn Haenen (1989) has created a light installation using found and canceled LED lights, originally made for commercial use. By reusing these discarded materials, he gives them a new life while raising questions about waste and sustainability. The lights guide visitors through a flowing path that shifts in intensity and direction, turning the act of entering into an immersive visual experience.

Where many artists prefer a blank canvas, Merijn is inspired by the space itself. He works with the architecture and its details—sometimes even security or safety equipment—making each work inseparable from its surroundings. He calls this approach site (non)specific: the installation could never be assembled in quite the same way again, yet its components can return in new combinations.
Merijn’s practice is rooted in intuition and play. By combining diverse materials in unexpected ways, he creates works that feel familiar yet undefinable, inviting viewers to reconsider everyday objects, perception, and space.
