3. About Villa

In short

Villa is a museum for contemporary, multidisciplinary art located in a monumental building at the Cultuurpark Westergas in Amsterdam. The museum presents a rotating collection of playful and autonomous artworks that speak to visitors directly and invite them in.

Villa targets a broad and diverse audience and works closely with artists to keep each exhibition surprising and fresh.

Mission

To make innovative, experiential, contemporary art accessible to a broad audience.

Vision

We believe art contributes to a better and more beautiful world. Art inspires, moves, and connects. It makes you feel, think, and look at the world differently. And it’s simply a lot of fun.

Sometimes art can feel difficult — as if you have to understand it before you can enjoy it. Villa focuses on art that touches you immediately.

At Villa, it’s love at first sight: first butterflies, then the stories behind the artists and their work. Not the other way around.

With our compact, sensory setup and focus on international work that is still rarely seen in the Netherlands, Villa offers a fresh addition to the current art landscape.

In doing so, we bridge the gap between tourist attractions and more institutional museums — and remain accessible to a broad and diverse public.

Strategy & Positioning

Villa is built from the ground up by and with artists. Together we ensure each artwork is shown to its best advantage.

The exhibitions change regularly, keeping every visit surprising and Villa relevant.

Villa is a private museum and operates entirely independently — Villa receives no public funding. This independent position allows us to be agile, follow our own path, and remain distinctive. Because Villa is built by and with artists, they share in the museum’s success financially.

Audience and Target Groups

Everyone is welcome at Villa. We target a broad and diverse audience: from young to old, including families, tourists, culture lovers and day-trippers.

More specifically, we focus on the following segments from the Dutch cultural Target Model:

1. Starting Culture Seekers

2 Curious Future Grabbers

3 Cultural Omnivores

4 Lavish Culture Lovers

5 Culture-Eating Families

6 Classical Culture Aficionados

4. About the Art and Artists in Villa

General

All artists at Villa use a strong visual language and create experiential art that directly engages the senses. Their work is investigative, physical, and visually striking, exploring themes such as the body, identity, space, and experience — often with a playful and sometimes critical undertone. Notable is the use of humour, alienation and/or the surreal.

The artists work in a multidisciplinary way, experiment with media and materials, and intentionally seek interaction with the viewer and the context.

Artworks by 14–18 artists are exhibited simultaneously in the 12 rooms and other spaces of Villa. By rotating new work frequently, Villa gives a platform to around 35 artists each year.

Villa opens with work by:

Elsemarijn Bruys, Folkert de Jong, Gilleam Trapenberg, Levi van Veluw, Max Siedentopf, Thomas Trum, Vera Gulikers, Willem de Haan, Yamuna Forzani, and Zoro Feigl.

More names will be announced in July and August. At the end of August, more information will follow about the works that the artists will show at Villa.

Installation is currently taking place (June–August 2025).
